Take Me Home Country Roads was Denver's first Top 10 Hit as a solo artist after having worked with small folk groups. The song was composed by Bill Danoff. Danoff had originally written the tune to Johnny Cash's tune in mind, but Denver was aware from the very first time he heard first versions of the song that it was going to be an instant popular. The song was performed on stage in Washington D.C. to a massive crowd, Denver made a recording a few days afterward.
